003. It's Time for Your Mid-Year Self-Review
Prompts I use to review, realign, and refocus how I want to show up in the second part of 2024.
“The days are long but the years are short.” I can still hear my mom’s voice saying year after year. And as I sit here, writing these words on July 10th — part 1 of 2024 is officially in the books.
To most, this halfway point goes unacknowledged as the days roll by but when I was laid off in April of 2022, my side quest of sharing my life lessons on social media, on-screen hosting gigs, and working with health and wellness brands to create digital content became my full-time job. My daily life became a business, completely shifting how I approached my day-to-day, month-to-month, and annual strategies.
Now, as an ambitious, strategic-thinking, hardworking January Capricorn, it should surprise no one that as soon as I began looking through “the business of Kayla” lens I outlined KPIs, terms + conditions, contractual obligations, and block off time for an annual review. When you think about it, many people take a capital “O” organizational approach to their lives. At the beginning of the year New Year resolutions or intentions are set with an accompanying action plan, throughout the year there is a restructuring of targets both personally and professionally, sick days and vacation time are [under]spent, and during that last week of the year, a weird limbo between what was and what’s to come, we look back to better inform how to move forward — fondly, sweetly but also sometimes regrettably and with frustration.
Thinking of the mixed emotions that can be unearthed in looking back brings me to the purpose of this post — it’s time you start implementing a mid-year self-review as checks and balances of living in alignment. We, as humans, are forever evolving with lives and goals that shift. So, instead of feeling like we have to live-and-die by a vision board created six month ago, I invite you to engage in some self-reflection.
It’s time you start implementing a mid-year self-review as checks and balances of living in alignment.
Below I’ve shared a few prompts I use during my mid-year self-reviews to reflect, reassess, realign and refocus for part two of 2024. These prompts have allowed me to take a closer look at “departments” in the business of Kayla that enable me to show up in my fullest essence: purpose, mindset, relationships, movement, fuel, and rest.
purpose
What achievements and progress are you proud of from the first six months?
How have your values and priorities evolved since setting your 2024 goals?
Are your current goals still meaningful and exciting to you? If not, where can you make adjustments?
mindset
What stories were your main narratives in the first half of the year?
How did those narratives impact how you showed up in the world?
Which stories will you rewrite in part 2 of 2024?
relationships
What relationships poured into you in the first half of the year? Which only took?
How has your relationship with yourself evolved?
Are there relationships that need to be released to heal, grow, and expand?
movement
What workouts excited you to move your body in the first half of the year?
What physical & internal strengths did you uncover?
What small, truly doable steps can you take today to get back on track or to continue building momentum?
fuel
What foods made you feel nourished in the first half of the year?
What foods made you feel sluggish?
How will you get more nourishing foods you love into your daily eating patterns?
rest
Did you incorporate regular rest in the first half of the year?
What barriers did you face in taking rest?
Do you have a bedtime routine? If not, what would you want your bedtime routine to include?
What is one way you will prioritize rest this week and continue to build on it?
Get into one or flush them all out. I’d love to know which “department” you make and take the time to edit for your elevation in the seasons ahead!
